E-Tricks - Streaming Media
Printer-friendly version
NAPT has mainly used blip, YouTube and Facebook for its streaming video, but we also like Hulu, Snagfilms, Revver, Vimeo and Livestream and are planning on expanding.
Some Streaming Video Websites:
- blip.tv
- Dailymotion - www.dailymotion.com/us
- Hulu - hulu.com
- Livestream - www.livestream.com
- Revver - www.revver.com
- Snagfilms - www.snagfilms.com
- Yahoo Video - http://video.yahoo.com
- Viddler - www.viddler.com
- Vimeo - www.vimeo.com
- YouTube - www.youtube.com
Some Tips for Sharing Streaming Video:
- Keep it short - 20 seconds to 2 minutes. The shorter the better.
- "Link" back in the video - Give people some way to find the source of the media. Once a video goes viral it can be hard for people to know where to get more of the same, especially with embedded videos. The only way to increase traffic at your site is to give people a way back.
Example:
- Include the video on your site - NAPT could contract to use streaming video servers, but we find using a service like blip or YouTube works just as well and costs a whole lot less, plus introduces us to a whole new audience.
- Text is important - Make sure that you give a description of the video both in the fields at the video sites and on your site when you embed the video. It is hard for search engines to index (find) video without text or metadata.
- Upload once - If you are just starting out uploading video to the web, you might want to consider using www.tubemogul.com which allows you to upload once to most of the video sites listed above and has other management tools. The free service has limits on it, but if it still meets your needs then it could be a time saver.
- Social networks can be video sites too - Remember that many social networking sites like Facebook or MySpace also allow you to upload and stream videos.
