Healthy Foods Like Chia Seeds

Hanh mitakuyapi / Hello my relatives.

Like so many of us, my birther was an alcoholic.  My foster father wasn't, which provided good contrast, & I didn't go her route but instead went the healthy-eating route.  I haven't survived unscathed, but the washichu 'experts' declared that I "was (definitely) going to be bed-ridden before I was on the earth 40 summers", & I've passed that & I'm still not there, so I must be doing something right.  I'm passing a bit of it on to you who are interested.

One of my unci had polio when she was 6.  The 'experts' declared that she would 'never' walk again.  Being of contrary disposition (it's got to be hereditary..), she used braces & crutches for 8 years until she got fed up with them & pitched them as far as she could.  She used canes for a couple of days after that & then pitched them too, & I can hear her say, "By di god, I'm going to walk!" - & then she did it.  She taught me, when I had a stroke after a washichu 'expert' gave me a wrong medication (& at 10X the normal dose..), "My girl, you can do anything if you want it more than you want your next breath."  That and, "What you don't use, you lose".

Like her, I stayed in the bed & did the phys therapy for awhile (months, not years) & then I got fed up with that & got out of bed, crawled into clothes & drawled down the stairs, used canes for a few weeks, & went back to walking.  She was right.

When synthetic sweeteners came on the market, I asked her what she thought & she said, "My girl, god didn't make you synthetic".  We didn't use them.  We used natural sweeteners, including cane sugar, in moderation.

Everything we eat does not 'have' to be sticky sweet.  There are so many interesting flavors & textures of food.. and back before IRA 1934 & being forced onto welfare, we had no diabetes in our Peoples.  But after being forced onto welfare in 1934, our first case of diabetes showed up among us in 1939.

When high fructose corn sweetener came on the market, she used the same reasoning & we avoided it - I still do..  and I'm the only member of my family to not have diabetes.  I'm also the only one who reads labels & avoids HFCS.  It's artificial; recent studies have shown that HFCS irritates the Islets of Langerhans (which are what part of your pancreas secretes insulin); other studies have shown that HFCS causes your body to 'see' food differently & put fat on you instead of using the carbs, protein, & fats appropriately (according to whatever kind of food you've eaten); etc., etc.

Like my Unci Pearl, I've long advocated eating more like our ancestors did.  Now recently, the health-foodists of the majority culture have 'discovered' chia seeds, which are from our Aztec-descended relatives.

Being adventurous sorts, one of my sisters & I decided to get some & try them.  They are supposed to promote healing, fat loss, & have all sorts of benefits.  After about 3 weeks of testing, I can tell you, "They work".

Fat loss - yes.  It's winter & like so many others, I fatten some in the winter.

Healing - yes.  I have had ongoing gum problems since I was 15, because my birther refused to listen to the dentist & have my baby teeth pulled 4 years earlier "so I'd have good teeth".  She waited until I was 15, then had him pull 6 teeth a day for 4 straight days, & I spent the summer with only the 4 permanent teeth that had already come in on their own, while my incoming permanent teeth caused itching in my gums that about drove me crazy.

I put about 1/2 tsp of chia seeds between my gum & lip & let them work their way out as they will.  I spit them out rather than swallow, to get rid of whatever 'bugs' they might have caught in the gel.  The itching is down to almost nothing & the color of the gums is nearly normal too.  Try 30+ years of itching & being unable to scratch it..  Feels like having been let of hell.  Our Traditional belief is that hell only exists here on earth & I believe it - especially in re this itching gums thing.

The chia seeds make a gel when they contact moisture (including saliva).  It's very soothing.

Chia seeds are very high in protein & carbohydrates & good fats (omega-3s & such), too.  The ancients used them as trail food because they could go a long time on just a small amount.  I figure about 1.5 tsps. is the right amount, but there is no set dose.

Being a Traditional healer, I talked a diabetic friend into trying them because she's had a lot of trouble keeping her sugar (a) down where it should be & (b) stable.  Her blood sugar has dropped to 'normal' levels & it's staying there on 2 'doses' of about 1.5 tsps each / day.  She takes some in the morning & some again in the late afternoon / early evening.

No bad side-effects, just good effects, & depending on where you buy them, not expensive at all.  It doesn't matter if you eat black chia seeds or white chia seeds; they work the same.  Once again, our ancestral diets are best.  I pass this information along to you in hopes it will help you or yours.  We are the smallest racial group on the earth, after all.  Mitakuye oiasin.
