Apply for a NAJA Travel Stipend

TV Producers are eligible to apply for travel stipends to attend the Native American Journalists Association, August 9-12 in Tulsa, OK. In partnership with NAJA, NAPT will present a series of workshops intended to non-fiction filmmakers.

Travel stipends will cover transportation, registration and lodging.

Workshops

1. Writing for the Ear
The writing principals of Accuracy, Brevity, and Clarity apply to both print and on-air journalism, but there are differences that can aid in understanding the spoken word on TV and Radio. This hands-on workshop will help you sharpen your writing skills for the broadcast media.

2. Legal issues for producers
Rights clearance, royalties, copyright, and use of archives and intellectual property are issues TV and radio producers are confronted with daily. Learn the basics of these legal protections, as well as cultural property rights when dealing with traditional tribal ceremonies and practices.

3. Getting it funded, produced and on the air. Documentary filmmakers discuss the process of moving from the story through production and broadcast. Learn about financing, fundraising, packaging and promotion.

4. Integrated Media. Documentary storytelling is not just limited to the on-air broadcast. Websites, cell phones, print, podcasts and teachers guides are all part of the blended media experience.

5. Producing for PBS and NAPT. Experienced Native PBS producers talk about the intricacies of working with this national distribution system. Learn about formats, financing, rights and life after broadcast.

NAJA Travel Stipend Application

Purpose
TV Producers are eligible to apply for travel stipends to attend the Native American Journalists Association, August 9-12 in Tulsa, OK. In partnership with NAJA, NAPT will present a series of workshops intended to non-fiction filmmakers.

Eligibility
Open to individuals who have a track record of producing programs about Native American subject matter, or who have been involved in Public Broadcasting.

Deadline
Postmark deadline: July 10, 2006.

Grant Amount
Travel stipends will cover transportation, registration and lodging.

Application Procedure
To assist in the review of your proposal, submit:

  • One signed copy of the application form.
  • One copy of an application narrative, which includes:

    1. Name and address.
    2. One copy of resume or biographical information.
    3. Statement of how this opportunity will advance the applicant’s skills or knowledge, and is important at this point in career development.

Evaluation
Evaluations are due 30 days from the ending date of NAJA.
Information required on the Evaluation Form includes description and comments on the project, rating (with explanation) of the activities, number of events attended, actual number of individuals benefiting (attendance), and financial report.
