Indolent BoysIn cooperation with the Wells Fargo Radio Theatre program and the Autry Museum of Western Heritage, AIROS will broadcast the radio adaptation of N. Scott Momaday’s The Indolent Boys.

Written by Lori Tubert, the radio play is based on historical events and Kiowa oral tradition. Set in Anadarko, Oklahoma Territory, in 1891, it tells the story of three homesick Native boys who ran away from a Kiowa Indian boarding school to return to their family’s camp and the consequences the boys and boarding school staff faced as a result. Until now, this story was passed on through the Kiowa oral tradition.

The Indolent Boys stars Edward Albert as Barton Wherritt, John Aniston as Superintendent Gregory, Michael Horse (Yaqui/Mescalero Apache/Zuni) as Emdotah, Arigon Starr (Kickapoo Tribe of Oklahoma) as Mother Goodeye, Zahn McClarnon (Standing Rock Sioux) as John Pai, and Tamara Krinsky as Carrie. Co-directed by Lori Tubert and Michael Horse, with a special introduction by novelist and playwright, N. Scott Momaday.

The Indolent Boys was originally written by N.Scott Momaday (Kiowa). A graduate of Stanford University, Momaday was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for his novel House Made of Dawn. In addition, he is a Guggenheim Fellowship recipient and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He is a member of the renowned Kiowa Gourd Dance Society and is presently Regents’ Professor of Humanities at the University of Arizona.

Since 1989, the Autry Museum of Western Heritage has presented over 30 original radio plays reflecting the West’s multicultural history.
