2005 State of Indian Nations Address
Tex HallOn Feb 3rd, 2005, the State of Indian Nations Address was broadcast live over the AIROS network. Listeners of tribal, community, college and public radio stations all over North America and on the web tuned in to hear Tex Hall (Mandan/Hidatsa/Arikara), President of the National Congress of American Indians, give his third annual State of Indian Nations Address. Native America Calling followed the speech with a live call-in talk show which allowed listeners from across Turtle Island to ask Tex Hall about the state of Indian Country and share their own opinions. Upcoming AIROS Specials from NMAI Grand Opening
NMAI Grand OpeningAIROS will present six programs recorded live from the grand opening of the National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C.

In September 2004, over 20,000 Indians came together on the National Mall for the First Americans Festival, a six-day event to celebrate the opening of the museum with music, dancing and storytelling. The event attracted 600,000 visitors, surpassing expectations and attracting worldwide attention.

Produced by Gregg McVicar (Tlingit), Peggy Berryhill (Muscogee) and Caleb Strickland (Lumbee), in association with Koahnic Broadcasting, each hour-long program will feature the best moments from this monumental event.

AIROS Features Native Health Documentaries
Four new documentaries on health issues will premiere this year on AIROS. Produced by the Native Media Resource Center, the programs were recorded at the Wellness and
Spirituality Conference, held in November 2004 in Tucson, AZ, and at the Native Youth and Adult Leadership Conference in San Diego, CA.

One features presentations from the 12th Annual Wellness and Spirituality Conference. Participants spoke on combining traditional healing concepts into medical and counseling practices. Keynote speaker Donald Warne begins the dialogue on the merging of traditional and modern medicine, and how our communities utilize both for healing.

Also in the series is Combating Diabetes: Food for Thought. As the number of Native Americans diagnosed with diabetes reaches epidemic proportions, treatment within Native American communities includes the incorporation of traditional healing methods, foods, and exercise, along with Western medical treatment. This program profi les the unique ways that Native American communities are addressing this health issue.

Two additional episodes in the series feature youth leadership and vignettes of health care practices in Indian Country.
