Eight Sleep is a fairly new company, having opened for business in 2014. One of its first efforts has been its focus on marketing one of the earliest non-wearable sleep trackers. But the company has also entered into the foam mattress business and now offers three mattress models. Each of these three models can be combined with the company’s sleep tracking device.
The Eight Sleep mattresses offer a number of valuable features:
Sleep Technology Innovation: The company’s sleep tracker goes on top of the mattress and serves the dual purpose of collecting data while allowing the sleeper to control the functions of the mattress from a smart phone. For those who like using cutting-edge technology and who want to be able to analyze the data about their sleeping patterns, this is ideal.
Mattress Options: While there are features that all three of the Eight Sleep mattresses have in common, each one has unique features as well. Those customers who want a basic mattress can choose the Saturn version. Those who want memory foam can choose Jupiter, while those who would like a hybrid mattress can go with Mars.
There are some potential negatives with the Eight Mattress product as well:
Recent Market Entry: There’s no question that the Eight Sleep company is a new player on the mattress market. Because of this, there are few quality reviews of their products and little data regarding the long-term performance of these mattresses.
Questions about Sleep Tracking: The science of sleep is still fairly young and extremely complicated. Even though sleep trackers can be used to gather a great deal of data, understanding what all of this data actually means and how to use it is the hard part.
Most of the eight smart mattresses are offered in six sizes, including Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King and California King, however the versions that include the technology cover are only available in full, Queen, King and California King. The prices are as follows:
- Saturn: Twin to California King $349-$749
- Saturn + Technology: Full to California King $699-$949
- Jupiter: Twin to California King $549-$1049
- Jupiter + Technology: Full to California King $999-$1249
- Mars: Twin to California King $749-$1399
- Mars + Technology: Full to California King $1299-$1599
As mentioned above, the eight sleep mattress comes in three different models. The layers of each of these models is a bit different in their internal construction. These differences are laid out below:
Saturn: The top layer of the Saturn model is comprised of 2 inches of polyfoam with a density of 3 PCF. The middle layer is a 2 inch thick transition foam with a density of 1.8 PCF. The bottom layer is 6 inches of support from with a density of 1.8 PCF.
Jupiter: The top layer of the Jupiter model uses 2 inches of polyfoam with a density of 3 PCF. The second layer is made of 2 inches of memory foam the density of 4 PCF. The third layer is 2 inches of transition foam with a density of 1.8 PCF. The bottom and last layer is 4 inches of support foam with a density of 1.8 PCF.
Mars: The top layer of the Mars model is comprised of 2 inches of polyfoam with a density of three PCF. The second layer is 2 inches of transition foam with a density of 1.8 PCF. The third layer uses 4 inches of sleeved innerspring coils. The bottom layer is a support foam with a density of 1.8 PCF.
The standard mattresses in the Eight Sleep line come with no add-on technology. But with the Smart mattress collection, all of the mattresses are supplemented with the smart cover. This smart cover technology layer is not a part of the mattress, but rather a cover that goes on top of it.
This technology serves as an effective sleep tracker, monitoring the movement of the people on the mattress so that they can better understand their own sleep patterns. It can also be used to manage the temperature of the bed and morning alarms – and can also be integrated with many other Wi-Fi enabled devices.
Purchasing and Shipping
All of the Eight Sleep products are manufactured in the United States. They can be purchased either directly from the manufacturer at their company website or via Amazon. In addition, the manufacturers have a New York City showroom. The company provides a 100 night sleep trial so you can try out their product.
However, at the end of 30 days, a customer can return either the mattress, the sleep tracker or both. You will be refunded for the returned item or items. If you choose to return the mattress, the company will contact you with suggestions for disposing of it in your area.
Shipping is free for all mattresses shipped anywhere in the continental United States – with the mattress usually arriving in 7-10 days of you placing the order. The company does not offer an installation service for the new mattress or for hauling away your old one. Both the sleep tracker and the mattress will arrive in separate boxes at your door.
Like other box mattresses, the product is compressed inside plastic packaging. After this packaging is opened and removed, the mattress will begin expanding to full size. It can take a full day for the mattress to complete this process.
The manufacturers provide a 10 year warranty for all versions of the Eight Sleep mattresses. During the period of the warranty, they will replace or repair any defective mattress. However, this warranty does not apply to the sleep tracker or the mattress covering. Instead, the cover comes with a two year warranty and the sleep tracker with a one-year warranty.
Unfortunately, this company has been in operation for so short a time that is difficult to arrive at an accurate evaluation of its customer service. At this time, there are only very limited reports – both good and bad – concerning its commitment to its customers. With the Better Business Bureau, it currently has a D+ rating.
The Performance of Eight Sleep Mattresses
When considering the performance of Eight Sleep mattresses, it’s best to keep in mind that they actually are divided into two separate parts: the mattress and the sleep tracker system. While the sleep tracker technology is interesting and can certainly help customers get more out of their mattress by developing better sleep habits, most of the following will focus on the mattresses themselves.
All versions of the eight sleep mattress come with a comfort layer comprised of polyfoam, although with the Jupiter version this polyfoam has a reinforcing memory foam layer. Memory foam is often used to provide sleepers with additional support, since it is highly responsive to the body’s various pressure points.
In the Saturn mattress, while the manufacturer has included no extra foam in the comfort layer, they have included a transitional foam layer. For some, this may be more than sufficient, but when testing this bed it’s clear that most people would probably prefer somewhat thicker comfort layers. Because of this, the Saturn mattress may not be right for side sleepers, heavier individuals or those with more sensitive pressure points.
The Mars mattress offers greater support because it includes an extra four-inch layer comprised of innerspring coils. Not surprisingly, this combination of foam and coils provides sleepers with a greater degree of comfort and support. One other point to consider with all of these mattresses is that when you purchase the version with the sleep tracker it as an additional layer between the comfort layer in the body that can reduce the responsiveness of the foam layers.
Again, these mattresses have not yet been available for long enough for anyone to evaluate their long-term durability. However, it can be said that the top 2 inch foam section of the comfort layer currently has a density of just three PCF, while 3.5 PCF would definitely be preferable in the top layer. But looking at the other components making up these mattresses, most of them are of the density you would expect and should for that reason provide a more or less average durability for the mattress.
Of course, given that the technology layer has much more complex and fragile components than the other parts of the mattress, it will almost certainly have a significantly shorter lifespan than any of the mattresses. Because of this, customers will almost certainly have to purchase multiple sleep tracker covers to use up the entire lifespan of the mattress.
All of the eight sleep mattress models are provided with a single firmness option, however each of the models comes with different firmness levels. For instance, the Saturn is approximately at 6-7 on a standard measurement for firmness, while the Jupiter is roughly 5-6 and the Mars is a 5.
When talking about motion transfer, Eight Sleep mattresses are more or less average for a foam mattress. This type of mattress is not going to provide as the degree of motion isolation that a memory foam mattress would. Even so, they will probably be more than sufficient to minimize the sleep disturbance problems most people have from motion.
Like virtually every other foam mattress after delivery, Eight Sleep mattresses will initially give off a bit of an odor after they are opened and taken out of the packaging. Within hours – or at most days – this odor should disappear. One way to deal with the problem is to take the mattress out of the packaging and put it in a room by itself for one or two days before you actually use it.
The Eight Sleep mattresses come with a comfort layer designed to provide the sleeper with a balance between responsiveness and support. Often, this top layer in many mattresses allows sleeper to become too hot – especially when they use standard memory foam that hugs the sleeper and allows him or her to seek down.
The eight sleep mattress minimizes this affect and helps ensure that you don’t sleep hot. It does this by providing increased breathability and airflow underneath the body. The technology layer also allows sleepers greater control over the temperature of the bed, further reducing heat retention problems.
Studies have shown that a good night’s sleep is essential for your physical, emotional and psychological well-being. People who don’t get enough sleep at night are drowsy the next day and often perform poorly academically or at work. Choosing the right mattress are you and your sleeping partner can be the most effective way to get the sleep you need and deserve.
